Here some words concerning the Dyne:Bolic project, which is also very nice and has the same goal, namely to build a linux-live-CD with streaming software on it:
I really say: "Use dynebolic!", but still it has some minor disadvantages, giving me the reason to reinvent the wheel a little:
- the Dstream/Freestream combination is much better than the MuSE-thigie, which is also on the CD. MuSE crashes very easy, and also you are not really able to see, if the stream is running well (in Freestream every second a dot appears to show the current status, no comparrison to the little GTK-widget in MuSE)
- XMMS-Crossfade plugin - showing the exact buffer, to observe streaming problems in advance. Unfortunately this is missing on the Dyne:bolic CD.
- The CD runs also in text-only mode (boot with streambox 2)
- also oggstreaming can be done with different programs
- reinstall very easy programs over the internet using the postinst protocoll
- nice music is also on the CD
- the CD can be easily remasterd like a KNOPPIX-CD, a lot of information is available on the net concerning to this...
- a streaming doku is included, right to printout
- a little streaming talk is included in the PDF-format
- audiosamples can be used to inform about the quality of streaming
- KDE as a Windowmanager for the Windoze-Look and Feel (Uargh)
- the whole automout-section is very well done on KNOPPIX
- Alsa and OSS - Sound
- everything is currently in German (this will change hopefully soon)
- silc-client, JAP and a lot of securitytools are on the CD
- etc.
